As I was driving in my car the other day, I found myself getting lost thinking about the many things I wish I could do or be. I wish I had more time to spend with my kids. I wish I could afford this or that. I wish I didn’t bloat up so much that I looked like I was 4 months pregnant again! I wish, I wish, I wish. It got me thinking, how many of us live our life based on wishes? The answer is we all do. In fact, I would even go so far as to say for many of us it seems as though the biggest bone in our body is our “wishbone”. How many of you wish that you could find the time to exercise, wish you could fit into that cute outfit in the store windows, wish you could stop drinking that diet coke every afternoon or stop eating those doughnuts for breakfast, or wish you had time to cook your family a nutritious meal? We are weighed down by our wishes all the time, and while it’s not bad to wish, nothing ever got accomplished with wishing alone.

Well, the good news is that it’s time to shed that “wishbone weight” by casting it aside and starting to use something real, your backbone. Wishes only become real when you decide to take control and get committed to what you truly wish for. Wishing to cook your family a nutritious meal will not make it happen, but using your backbone to navigate your way will. Wishing you’d stop eating doughnuts for breakfast does nothing, but using your backbone and deciding to change things yourself makes that wish a reality.

This concept may be scary and it may seem like it’s too hard to do. I mean, how do we learn how to act on our wishes? The great news is, we CAN do it! We all already possess a backbone, we just need to become empowered and learn how to use it! Start slow by setting small goals and going from there. Decide to make one nutritious meal this week for your family, choose one different breakfast choice tomorrow morning, or decide on a 15 minute walk as your break today. Here is the kicker…when you accomplish those goals, make sure you don’t sit around “wishing” you did better! Be PROUD of yourself for those accomplishments and DECIDE to take another step forward. Start small, gain momentum! Before you know it, that one step may lead to a milestone, and over time, with the use of your backbone, that milestone will lead you to even greater accomplishments. Keep moving forward and become empowered by the positive choices you are making!

Well, it’s time for me to go off and work to make my wishes a reality. Remember, no dreams ever came true from wishing alone. The power lives and comes from you. If you need proof or inspiration, just give yourself a pat on the back. Your good old backbone will be right there.
