Imagine this—you hear the phone ring and you have a feeling it’s your friend, Jeanette. She’s been on your mind lately. You answer, “Hello?” You hear, “Hey Amy! It’s Jeanette! How’ve you been?” You smile ear to ear, because you knew she was calling before you heard her voice. Intuition is a beautiful thing we women are gifted with.
Now imagine this—you hear the, “I’m hungry!” signal in your brain and you have a sense that you may need more water or protein. Or whatever your body is asking for at the moment. Well, you certainly can be on the same page with your body as you are with your friends.
Intuition is a powerful thing. I’m here to tell you it is possible to be in tune with your body and see what it needs. I call it Intuitive Eating, which means you feel good about what you eat, letting go of judgment if it was bad or good. You consume the best foods for you in comfortable portions. After a meal, you feel pleasantly satisfied.
About 3-5 times a day, your body signals your brain that it needs nutrients. Your stomach growls, you’re on the computer and no longer can focus, brain signals that you’re getting hungry, etc.
The first step to Intuitive Eating is to:
1. Stop what you’re doing and take 3 deep breathes.
2. Ask your body silently to yourself, “Am I hungry?
3. Ask yourself “Where am I at on the Hunger Scale?” (See this cool tip that is on my clients top list of “Amy Tools” – The Hunger Scale )
4. Ask “What does my body need for nourishment?” and listen. Taking time to be quiet with yourself can make a difference between grabbing the Snicker’s Bar or a nourishing lunch.
Dieting is a Dirty Word!
Eating intuitively will help you lose weight and maintain an appreciation for all your body does and how it feels and looks. Remember, intuitive eating will vary from person to person. It will also vary weekly and monthly for you.
Intuitive eating does not mean eating perfectly healthy and chewing every bite 20 times. But what is realistic is being present with yourself when you eat. Chew slowly and savor the flavors, the texture, and smells. Enjoy the experience of nourishing your body.
Progress Over Perfection
A great tool to eat healthfully for your body is to activate the 3rd chakra. Your 3rd chakra is called the Solar Plexus and is located in your belly. When you meditate on this energy center, you can drop down into your body and surrender to what it needs. Not what Prevention magazine says you should be eating to lose weight. There’s a big difference.
Only you know your body best and what it needs to feel amazing. When you allow yourself to let go of the struggle to have will power over certain foods, you feel lighter. You transform your relationship to food. You feel less pressure to eat the perfect portion in the perfect lunchbox with your perfect little water bottle and perfect organic lemon wedges.
The benefits of shifting towards a more loving, nourishing practice such as intuitive eating allows your body and soul to exhale. Ahhhh! You’ll be more present to and enjoy eating. The next time you’re hungry, check in with yourself. Honor exactly what you need in that moment.
If you are ready to let go of the diet mentality or trying too, there is a way and I would love to support you. Surrender to what your body needs!
